About the event
At the heart of this programme is Herbert Howells' Requiem, one of the most significant works in the twentieth-century English choral repertoire. Written in the years following the death of the composer's young son but withheld from public performance for decades, the work brings together passages from the Requiem Mass and the Psalms in a deeply personal reflection on grief, loss and hope. Its six movements trace a journey from supplication and sorrow to a hard-won sense of peace.
The surrounding repertoire offers different perspectives on these themes. Sacred works by Vasily Titov, Andrzej Rohaczewski and Aaron Copland draw on traditions of prayer, lament and praise, while Stephen Paulus' The Day is Done, the traditional spiritual Calling My Children Home, and Patrik Berg Almkvisth's Av jord till jord reflect on memory, farewell and the cycle of life.
